Since we haven't had any living former popes in the past several centuries, the only comparison I can think of is the way US presidents look when they leave office, and they usually look like they served a few years in purgatory. Sure, some of the changes are due to aging, but I always get struck by HOW bad they look at the end of their terms, even if they are one-term office holders.
