My Name on My Milk

A good friend of mine, a writer named Jeff Essmann, just published a piece about trying to find a room to rent after a very hard time financially, in the Morning News. It's a wonderfully funny and interesting piece. I know I haven't had much to say of late; I thought you might enjoy some really really good prose.

The piece is called "My Name on My Milk."

It Gets Better

These days I'm so locked in my room watching old movies, I'm pretty disconnected from what's going on day to day in the world. But last week I was moved at an interview on NPR with columnist Dan Savage, who began a youtube channel for LGBT men and women to talk about the challenges they faced growing up, and how things have gotten better.

The channel has really taken off in the aftermath of the recent rash of suicides and violence against gay youth in the United States, and there are now hundreds of videos, short and long, by others wanting to offer comfort and encouragement to LGBT youth and their families.

As far as I have been able to find, no Catholic clergy or religious have offered reflections. Hopefully that's not to say that the Church dismisses the important service that's being offered. We believe in the inherent and inalienable dignity of each and every one of us as children of God. The It Gets Better channel offers a means for young people who are being persecuted to hold on to or discover that value, and their fundamental beauty as human beings.

If you haven't been to the channel yet, I encourage you to check it out.

Couple Little Friday Gifts

Sorry I've been away the last few weeks.  School work is keeping me hopping.

In the meantime, I've come across two really nice videos you might like. The first is a little funny video -- it's a couple kids making some sort of dish on Youtube.  Be patient with it, and you'll be rewarded.

(As always, these videos will look much better if you click on them and watch them on Youtube. FYI.)

The second, oh my do I love this, is a short music video. I dare you to watch it and not find it incredibly moving. Knocks me off my feet. (For those who are interested in such things, the video was done by the people who put together the TV show Dollhouse the last few years.)

I'll try to post a little bit more next week. Say some prayers for God's grad students! :)

If you stopped right now and listened, what would you hear?

We can think about prayer as a sort of escape from reality, but sometimes the best prayer comes from just closing your eyes and drinking the sounds of the world around you.  No need to evaluate what the sounds all are, if there's a lot of them.  Just let it wash over you. Whatever feelings come up, think of them as a gift.  Another way the Lord resonates within you.
